If the worst happens
A claim shouldn't feel like a fight.
A stolen safe, a barrel that lets go, a rifle that never comes off the plane. When it happens you want a payment and a straight answer, not a runaround. Here is exactly how a Gun & Trophy claim works, and why it stays off your homeowner's policy for good.
How to file
Three steps, start to payment.
No portal maze and no fine-print scavenger hunt. You report the loss, send us what you have, and we issue your payment.
Report the loss
Call us or start online and tell us what happened. We open the claim with The Hanover and walk you through what comes next.
Send estimates and proof of ownership
Provide repair or replacement estimates and proof that the property was yours. On blanket coverage there is nothing to file up front, you only show ownership if you ever claim.
We issue payment
Once the loss is confirmed, your payment is issued. The deductible applies per occurrence, not per gun, so one event means one deductible.
Primary basis
We pay first. Your homeowner's never enters the picture.
Our policy pays on a primary basis for your owned guns, so we settle the loss and your homeowner's insurer is never involved. That protects more than your rate. Carriers routinely non-renew over a single gun-theft claim. Keep the claim with us and your home policy stays clean.

When the worst happens
The loss.
Theft, fire, a barrel blow-up, a gun that never comes home from the hunt.

How it ends
Paid.
A payment that makes you whole, and a claim that never touched your homeowner's.
Primary and non-contributory
We pay first on your owned guns. Your homeowner's policy, and your homeowner's rate, stay out of it entirely.
Broad theft coverage
Theft is covered worldwide with a signed police report, including from your vehicle, at shooting ranges and clubs, and while your guns ship by common carrier.
Automatic pickup
Newly acquired guns are covered up to $25,000 before you ever report them, for up to 90 days after you buy.

The details that matter at claim time
Straight from the policy.
The answers most collectors want before they ever file, in the carrier's own words.
Claims, answered
This answer should be considered in conjunction with Question 1. Our policy provides coverage on a primary basis on loss to an owned gun. This means you do not have to get your homeowner's insurance company involved in a loss.
Question 1 alludes to the advantages of not alerting your homeowner's company to the theft of your guns. The only time our policy refers to coverage on an excess basis is when referring to coverage for "non-owned guns" i.e., loaners. Most policies provide coverage for non-owned guns if the insured is deemed "legally liable" for the loss. We will pay up to $25k in excess of any valid and collectible other insurance to a loss of a non-owned gun in our insured's care, custody, or control irrespective of legal liability. Refer to Coverage & Limits.
Most insurance contracts that cover guns provide coverage for theft anywhere in the world. Having said that, there are contractual restrictions that adversely affect the scope of this coverage. Every insurance contract has "conditions" and "exclusions." One specific limitation deals with a provision known as a "locked vehicle warranty." Most policies will stipulate that theft of a gun from a vehicle is not covered unless the vehicle was locked at the time of the loss and there were visible signs of forcible entry.
Our policy is far broader. Theft is covered worldwide with a signed police report. Our intent is to provide broad coverage for theft wherever it happens, including while your guns are shipped by a common carrier.
We have a built-in "automatic pickup feature" for newly acquired guns or trophies. We will provide coverage for guns until the first of these three contingencies arise:
- 1. You report the newly acquired gun to us.
- 2. 90 days pass after the date you acquired the gun.
- 3. This policy expires.
The limit for this coverage is $25k (refer to Coverage & Limits).
The deductible applies per occurrence.
